RELATED LINKS:
The Island Line Trail is a 14-mile long paved and unpaved pathway that spans from Burlington, across the Winooski River and across a portion of Lake Champlain to reach the south end of Grand Isle. Portions of the trail were constructed along an abandoned railroad right-of-way. The trail goes past the Downtown Burlington area and along the Lake Champlain waterfront and includes the 3.5-mile long Colchester Causeway that juts out into the lake.
The trail offers charming views of the Burlington Waterfront with the marinas, parks and views across Lake Champlain. On clear days, Vermont's Green Mountains can be seen the distance.
Conditions
The Island Line Trail is paved for the southern 7-miles. North of that, the trails has an improved packed gravel surface. The trail is open for bike riding, running and walking. There is a gap in the trail at mile 12.5 called "The Cut". To reach the other side, a ferry service is provided in summer months on certain days. Verify locally if the ferry service is available. There is an additional 1.5 mile of unpaved trail to the north of "The Cut" that reaches to Grand Isle.
