Recreational trails for walking, running and cycling in Juneau, Alaska
Juneau is located in Southeastern Alaska. The city is the state capital, has a rich history dating back to the Alaskan Gold Rush and is the destination for thousands of tourists that come on cruise ships or by air to visit the many attractions that this area has to offer. The Downtown Juneau area has shops and restaurants and farther to the west is Mendenhall Glacier. There is also fishing, hiking and flights over the surrounding area. Douglas Island sits across the Gastineau Channel from Juneau and has a ski area and hiking trails as well as pretty views of Downtown Juneau.
Downtown Juneau Waterfront Trails
Downtown Juneau has 1.5-miles of paved multi-use paths that follow the waterfront along Gastineau Channel or cross the Juneau-Douglas Bridge. The paths take visitors past restaurants, shops and where the enormous cruise ships dock while visiting the city.
Gold Creek Flume Trail
The Gold Creek Flume Trail is a 0.7-mile long unpaved pathway that follows the channel to the north of the Downtown Juneau area. The trail has gentle grades and makes a great getaway from the traffic and congestion of downtown. The trail travels through dense forest and offers a chance to see some wildlife. The trail can be accessed from Basin Road or Evergreen Avenue.
Mendenhall Valley Trails
There are several miles of paved multi-use recreational paths for bike riding, running and walking along the roads in the Mendanhall Valley area 10-miles northwest of Juneau. This area is just north of the Juneau International Airport. The trails follow alongside both Glacier Highway and Mendenhall Loop Road. Some of the attractions in the area are Auke Lake, the campus of the University of Alaska Juneau, Chapel by the Lake, the Mendenhall River, Mendenhall Lake and the Mendenhall Glacier. Up at the glacier, there are numerous hiking trails around the lake, up to the base of the glacier and into the surrounding hills.
Kaxdigoowe Heen Dei Trail
The Kaxdigoowe Heen Dei Trail is a 2-mile long paved pathway located in the Mendenhall Valley. The trail travels through the forested area alongside Mendenhall River and spans from Glacier Highway to River Road.
