The AZ-51 Piestewa Freeway Trail is a mostly paved pathway that follows alongside the Piestewa Freeway for 5.5 miles on the north side of the Phoenix area. The trail connects with pathways along the canals in the north and to walking trails along Stone Creek Golf Course on the south.
Conditions
The AZ-51 Piestewa Freeway Trail is paved except for some of the access paths. The trail travels alongside a major feeeway and has a number of street crossings across major roadways. There are overpasses along the route for crossing AZ-15.

At its southernmost end, the AZ-51 Piestewa Freeway Trail connects to the Stone Creek Trail.
End Points and Route Description
The north end of the AZ-51 Piestewa Freeway Trail is located 0.5 miles south of the interchange between the AZ-51 and AZ-101 freeways on the northeast side of Phoenix. At this location, the trail meets up with unpaved pathways along the Central Arizona Project Canal. The AZ-51 Piestewa Freeway Trail then heads south across the canal using the bridge for the freeway. The trail is located on the east side of the freeway. There is a bridge for the trail to cross Union Hills Drive and access ramps for getting to roadway. AAEC High School is on the west side of the freeway at this location.
Further south, the AZ-51 Piestewa Freeway Trail runs adjacent to Paradise Valley Park. The park has parking, restrooms, a skate park, a pool, athletic fields and the Paradise Valley Community Center. At this location there is a bridge for the trail that crosses the freeway for access to the neighborhoods on the west side.
The trail has its own bridge for crossing Bell Road with access paths to the roadway. The main trail then crosses the freeway near Paradise Lane. To continue south on the trail, you need to cross this bridge as the main trail is now located on the west side of the freeway. There is a bridge for the trail to cross E. Greenway Road with access paths to reach the roadway. South of E. Greenway Road, there is another bridge over the freeway to reach the neighborhoods on the east side. The main trail stays on the west side of the freeway.
The trail runs adjacent to Venturoso Park. Just south of the park, the main trail crosses the freeway with its own bridge and goes back to traveling along the east side of the freeway and then heads to the southeast away from the freeway. The trail goes by the Shadow Mountain Senior Center and crosses E. Sweetwater Avenue at street level.
The AZ-51 Piestewa Freeway Trail continues heading to the southeast along the drainage way, goes under N. 40th Street and ends at E. Cactus Road, just east of N. 40th Street. At this location, the trail meets up with the walking paths that wrap around Stone Creek Golf Course, be sure to use the walking paths and not the paths for the golf carts.
