Recreational trails for walking, running and cycling in New Haven, Connecticut
New Haven is located on Long Island Sound in Southern Connecticut. The city is home to the Port of New Haven and Yale University.
The recreational trails in thie New Haven area includes the state wide Farmington Canal Heritage Trail, the trail around Lake Saltonstall, the Harborside Trail and the many trails of West Rock Ridge State Park.
Farmington Canal Heritage Trail
The south end of the Farmington Canal Heritage Trail is located at Trumbull Street and Hillhouse Avenue at the campus of Yale University in the center of New Haven. The trail then heads north as far as Cheshire, with other sections reaching as far as the border with Massachusetts.
The section of the Farmington Canal Heritage Trail that travels through the New Haven area is paved and follows the route of the historic canal that dates back to 1828. The railroad that replaced the canal also existed along this corridor. This route goes through the center of New Haven then past local parks, schools and residential neighborhoods. Alongside the trail exists woodlands, wetlands and natural areas including the Lake Whitney Open Space.
Another section of the trail is located on the southeast side of the downtown area. This section follows alongside roadways and heads soth to the waterfront around Long Wharf.
