Regional Trails

The Summerset Trail is an 11-mile long paved pathway that spans between the communities of Carlisle and Indianola to the southeast of Des Moines, Iowa. The trail was constructed along an abandoned railroad right-of-way and travels across the Iowa countryside. The trail goes through farming communities, past woodlands and wetlands.

The trail includes bridges over the Middle River and offers an opportunity to see some of the local wildlife while getting some healthy outdoor exercise.

Conditions

The Summerset Trail is paved the entire way and is open for bike riding, walking and running. There are relatively few road crossings and the grades are gentle.

Nearby Trails

In Carlisle, the Summerset Trail connects to local neighborhood trails on the south side of town.

In Indianola, the Summerset Trail allows a connection to the McVay Trail. The McVay Trail heads over to the east side of town and close to Indianola Middle School and the Pickard Recreation Center. The Summerset Trail also meets up with the Jerry Kelley Trail that goes past Simpson College and McBride Field.

End Points

The north end of the Summerset Trail is located at S. 1st Street and Route 5 in Carlisle. This point is located just south of Carlisle High School.

The south end of the trail is located at E. Euclid Avenue and N. Jefferson Way in Indianola.
