The Santa Fe Rail Trail is 15.5-mile long paved and unpaved pathway located to the south side of Downtown Santa Fe. The route of the trail follows alongside the active railroad line for the Rail Runner Express.
Inside the city, the 3.5-mile long Santa Fe Rail Trail is wide and paved. The north end of the trail is along Alta Vista Street just south of the downtown area. Along the route in town, the Santa Fe Rail Trail intersects the Arroyo De Los Chamisos Trail at Siringo Road near Santa Fe High School then takes a wide loop eventually reaching Interstate 25 to the west of S. St. Francis Drive. The pavement ends at the south side of the interstate.
The remaining 12 miles of the Santa Fe Rail Trail extends south from Interstate 25 and is unpaved. It travels along side the railroad tracks through scrub brush and piñon pine trees. The southernmost portion of the trail travels through the residential neighborhoods of Eldorado at Santa Fe.
Conditions
The northerly 3.5 miles of the Santa Fe Rail Trail is paved. The trail is open for bike riding, running and walking. there are relatively few road crossing within town, but the crossings are at busy roadways.
The southerly 12 miles of the trail are unpaved and in various states of condition. Bikes with wider tires are recommended.

Acequia Trail: the two trails are located within a couple of blocks on the north end of the Santa Fe Rail Trail.
Arroyo De Los Chamisos Trail: the two trails intersect along Siringo Road near Santa Fe High School
Gail Ryba Trail: the two trails are located on either side of S. St Francis Drive to the north of W. Zia Road.
Spur Trail to Santa Fe Community College: the 3-milelong Spur Trail takes off to the west from the unpaved portion of the Santa Fe Rail Trail at a point about 2 miles along the trail south of the Interstate 25 underpass. The Spur Trail goes as far as Richards Avenue.
Trails at Eldorado at Santa Fe: the Santa Fe Rail Trail intersects the recreational trails within Eldorado at Santa Fe in two locations Avenida Vista Grande and Avenida Eldorado.
End Points
The north end of the Santa Fe Rail Trail is located at Alta Vista Street to the east of Cerrillos Road in Downtown Santa Fe.
The south end of the trail is located along US Highway 285 near Cerro Alto Road to the west of the community of Lamy.
