The American Tobacco Trail is 22.6-mile long paved and compacted screened stone pathway that runs from Downtown Durham to the outskirts of Apex in Central North Carolina. The trail was constructed along the abandoned railroad corridor known as the New Hope Valley Railroad. The route of the trail includes the urban area of Downtown Durham, the residential suburbs and the beautiful hardwood forests of the North Carolina countryside. The trail was constructed and is maintained by the Triangle Rails to Trails Conservancy.
Conditions
The American Tobacco Trail is paved for the northerly 14.6 miles, from Downtown Durham to New Hope Church Road. The trail is open for non-motorized use such as bike riding, walking and running. Horses are allowed south of New Hope Church Road. There are relatively few road crossings along the trail with an overpass to cross Interstate 40 and an underpass to cross State Highway 64.

End Points
The north end of the American Tobacco Trail is located at the intersection of Jackie Robinson Drive and Blackwell Street in Downtown Durham. There is a parking area at this locatin. The terminus of the trail is across the street from the Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
There is a spur for the trail that takes off to the east along Riddle Road. This spur goes past Campus Hills Park and ends at S. Briggs Avenue.
The south end of the trail is located at a point along New Hill Olive Chapel Road, 2 miles south of State Highway 64 in Chatham County, west of Apex. There is a large trailhead with parking at this location.
