Recreational trails for walking and cycling in Pierre and Fort Pierre, South Dakota

Pierre is the capital city and located in central South Dakota. The City of Pierre and the City of Fort Pierre are located on each side of the Missouri River,  just south of Lake Oahe and just north of Fort Pierre National Grassland.

This area along the Missouri River has several paved recreational trails that follow the river or the major roadways. There are also many unpaved trails for exploring the natural areas such as along the trails on LaFramboise Island or Farm Island.

Riverfront Trail

The Riverfront Trail is a 6-mile long paved pathway that follows alongside the Missouri River near Downtown Pierre. The trail as a short section in Fort Pierre and a pedestrian lane along the bridge for Sioux Avenue. The trail then follows the riverbanks going past Downtown Pierre, Steamboat Park, the causeway to La Framboise Island, Griffin Park, Pierre Marina Recreational Area, Oahe Softball Complex and Farm Island State Recreation Area.

Oahe Downstream Trail

The Oahe Downstream Trail is a 4-mile long paved trail that extends from Fort Pierre to the Oahe Downstrem Recreation Area. The south end of the trail is located on Skerrols Street north of Highway 14. the trail is pretty much a straight shot through farmland and runs alongside the roadway. The north end of the trail kicks to the northeast and ends at the road along the river. You can use the roads to cross the river and get over to the Downstream Recreation Area and Oahe Marina and Resort.
