The Air Line State Park Trail is a 53-mile long unpaved pathway that spans between East Hampton and Pomfret in Eastern Connecticut.
The Air Line State Park Trail follows a historic abandoned railroad right-of-way and travels through miles and miles of thick woodlands and past rural communities. The route is that of the rail line between Boston and New York.
A 3.5-mile long branch called the Colchester Spur heads to the south to the middle of Colchester.
Conditions
The Air Line State Park Trail has a graded unpaved surface. The trail is open for bike riding, running and walking. Horseback riding is also allowed on the trail. Much of the route is located away from roadways. There are no fees for the use of the trail.
There are two gaps in the route where trail users will need to use local streets to reach the next section. One very short gap is located at Highway 2 in Amston. The other 3/4-mile long gap is located in Downtown Willimantec. Trail users can use Riverside Drive to connect to the next section.
The trail is in various states of condition and trail users should check with the local authorities about the trail condition while planning your trip.

Hop River State Park Trail: the two trails come within 2.5 miles of each other in Willimantic. A 0.6-mile long spur of the Air Line State Park Trail heads to the north on the east side of the bridge over the Willmantic River in Willmantic.
End Points
The southwest end of the Air Line State Park Trail is located along Main Street to the south of Summit Street in East Hampton. There is parking for the trail on Smith Street.
The northeast end of the trail is located along Wrights Crossing Road to the south of Pomfret.
