Recreational trails for walking, running and cycling in New Orleans, Louisiana
New Orleans is located in Southern Louisiana. The city sits between Lake Pontchartrain and the Mississippi River. There are recreational trails for walking, running, bike riding and sight seeing along the lakefront, the river front and within the parks around New Orleans.
Mississippi River Trail
The Mississippi River Trail is a system of paved and unpaved pathways that run alongside the channel for the Mississippi River in the New Orleans area. There are several separate sections of the trail that go through different kinds of landscape. Some of the trail goes past farm land and rural residential areas, other sections go past the piers and industrial sections of the city and other sections go past residential neighborhoods.
The trails provide a way to see the sights and get some outdoor exercise on foot or bicycle without having to cross numerous streets and deal with traffic. The trail goes past several local parks and the sights along the trail include views of the bridges and the boat and barge traffic along the river.

Levee Trail
The Levee Trail is a 12-mile long paved pathway that follows the shores of Lake Pontchartrain on the north side of the city of New Orleans. The west end of the trail follows the Duncan Canal, then the trail heads to the east along the shoreline of Lake Pontchartrain. The trail goes past residential neighborhoods, Laketown Park, the spillways for the Elmwood Canal and the Suburban Canal, the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway, the Bonnabel Boat Launch and Bucktown Harbor Marina.
