Recreational trails for walking & cycling in Grand Island & Central City, Nebraska
Grand Island is located in South Central Nebraska. it is 88 miles west of the capitol city of Lincoln. The city is located along the Wood River and in northwest of the Platte River and just north if Interstate 80. This area is situated on the open prairie and is surrounded by farmland. Other communities in this area include Chapman, Central City, Overland, Dannebrog, Aurora and Marquette.
Grand Island has a system of over 8 miles of recreational trails for bike riding and walking. There are paved and unpaved pathways in many locations throughout the city for getting about town, enjoying the outdoors or for commuting to work or school.
Dark Island Trail
The Dark Island Trail is a 8.4-mile long unpaved pathway that spans between Central City and Marquette. The trail follows the route of an abandoned railroad right-of-way and includes a long bridge that spans the Platte River. The trail crossed through Central City then across farmland and natural areas along the river. There are only a few road crossings.
The northern 3 miles trail has been improved with crushed / compacted stone within Central City and through the natural areas on the north and south bank of the river. To the south of E 27 Road the trail has a more natural surface suitable for mountain bikes and hiking.
The north end of the Dark Island Trail is located along Highway 30 in the middle of Central City. The south end of the trail is located along Marquis Avenue in Marquette.
