The Delaware and Raritan Canal State Park is located in Central New Jersey. The 70-mile long D & R Canal Trail runs through the park alongside the canal and near to the Delaware River then the Raritan River. The state park is open for canoeing along the canal and riding a bike or hiking along the trail. The trail goes through beautiful forests rich with wildlife or across wetlands.Along the trail you will find historic bridges, stone arched culverts, historical homes and canoes and kayaks along the canal.The D & R Canal Trail follows the old towpath for the canal where mules would pull the boats along.
Conditions
The D & R Canal Trail has a surface of compacted crushed stone for most of the route and a natural surface in some sections. The trail is open for bike riding and walking. Horses are allowed in some areas.

Deleware Canal Towpath: The D & R Canal Trail is located across the river from the Delaware Canal Towpath that extends from Easton to Levitttown, Pennsylvania. The Delaware Canal Towpath can be reached via the bridges across the Delaware River.
New Brunswick Trails: In New Brunswick, the D & R Trail ends near the trails at Buccleuch Park, the trails at Johnson Park, and the pathways at Rutgers University Busch Campus Center.

End Points
The north end of the D & L Canal Trail is located at a point 2 miles to the north of the middle of Frenchtown and west of Frenchtown Road.
The trail goes through Trenton then heads north again near Warren Street and Tucker Street.
The east end of the trail is located at a point just north of Buccleuch Park in New Brunswick, near George Street and Landing Lane. This located is directly across the canal from Rutgers University.
