The Wallkill Valley Rail trail is a 22-mile long unpaved pathway located in Southeastern New York State. The route is southwest of Kingston and west of Poughkeepsie. The trail was built along an abandoned railroad corridor and goes through beautiful rural areas and past several communities. Trail users will pass orchards, farms, lakes, rivers and thick hardwood forests. The trail also goes through historic districts. The Wallkill Valley Rail Trail is a National Recreation Trail.
Conditions
The Wallkill Rail Trail is open for non-motorized use such as bike riding and walking. Horses are also allowed on the trail. The trail surface is gravel and hard packed dirt. There are a few paved sections within the towns.

The Wallkill Valley Rail Trail goes past the following communities: Kingston, Rosendale, New Paltz and Gardiner.
Highlights & Points of Interest
The highlight of the trail is the Rosendale Trestle. This bridge is 940 feet long and 150 feet above Rondout Creek. There are also views of Joppenburgh Mountain. The trail goes past quaint historic towns and structures.
The Wallkill Valley Rail Trail goes past: Ulster Boces School, New Paltz Park, New Paltz Park & Ride and the Gardiner Library.
Nearby Trails
The Shawangunk, Walden and Wallkill Rail Trail is located along the same railroad corridor and starts at Birch Road, a little over a mile to the south of the south end of the Wallkill Valley Rail Trail.
The Marbletown O & W Rail Trail is located about 1.5 miles to west of the Wallkill Valley Rail Trail.
The Hudson Valley Rail Trail is located to the east, starting at the community of Lloyd and extending to the Walkway Over the Hudson and connecting the Dutchess Rail Trail in Poughkeepsie.
End Points
The north end of the Wallkill Valley Rail Trail is located along Route 32 near Rockwell Lane in Hillside.
The south end of the Wallkill Valley Rail Trail is located at Denniston Road to the east of Sand Hill Road in Gardiner.
