Recreational trails for walking, running and cycling around Utica and Rome, New York
The cities of Utica and Rome are located in Central New York State. These cities are situated along the Erie Canal and have a rich history. There are three sections of the trail along the Erie Canalway within this area.
Utica has around 6.8-miles of paved recreation trails that wrap around the west side of the city. These trails include multi-use paths alongside Cedar Mills Road, Halsey Road and the Phillip Rayhill Memorial Recreation Trail.
Erie Canalway
The Erie Canalway is a system of paved and unpaved pathways that stretches across upstate New York for over 524 miles. This system of individual and often separate trails stretches from Buffalo to Albany. The trail goes through miles of the beautiful New York countryside and past a number of larger cities and numerous smaller communities.
The Utica and Rome area has three separate section of the Erie Canalway trail with paved and unpaved portions. One section heads to the west from Rome and the other two sections span between Rome and Utica. Attractions and destinations along the canal in this part of New York State include: Erie Canal Village, the Fort Bull Monastery, the Rome Station for Amtrak, natural areas along the Mohawk River, Whitesboro High School and Lock 20 State Canal Park.

Philip Rayhill Memorial Recreational Trail
The Phillip Rayhill Memorial Recreation Trail is a 3.8-mile long paved pathway located in New Harford on the west side of Utica. The trail spans between Halsey Road and Lomond Place off of Chenango Road. The trail follows alongside Route 840 ith a short section going through through densly wooded areas.
