The Riverwalk is a 6.5-mile long paved pathway that follows the banks of the Niagara River from Downtown Buffalo north to Tonawanda and is the westernmost section of the Erie Canalway. There are efforts underway to revitalize the Riverwalk and improve the appearance and condition of the pathway and the adjacent area.
The Riverwalk connects several parks and other attractions along the Niagara River. It also connects to the pedestrian walkways on the South Grand Island Bridge.
Conditions
The Riverwalk is paved the entire route. The walkway is open for walking, running and bicycles.
The route is not continuous and there are gaps that require trail users to use local streets or sidewalks to connect to the next section.
Nearby Trails
The Riverwalk connects to the Scajaquada Pathway near Niagara Street and Tonawanda Street to the north of Downtown Buffalo. The Erie Canalway then heads to the north and follows the river until Tonawanda. At Tonawanda, the trail heads eastward alongside Tonawanda Creek which is the western end of the Erie Canal system.
The Riverwalk also connects to the pedestrian walkways on the South Grand Island Bridge. This allows a connection to the South Parkway Trail and the trails at Beaver Island State Park.
