Recreational trails for walking, running and cycling in Lynchburg, Virginia
Lynchburg is located in the middle of the State of Virginia, surrounded by foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains and situated along the James River.
The city has two recreational trails, the James River Heritage Trail and the Blackwater Creek Bikeway.
James River Heritage Trail
The James River Heritage Trail is a paved pathway that travels for over 8 miles through Lynchburg. The trail was constructed along an abandoned railroad right-of-way and includes a couple of old railroad bridges over the James River. The trail meanders through the thickly forested area to the north of the city, then crosses through the central business district. The trail crosses the James River near the bridge for the Lynchburg Expressway, travels across Percival's Island Natural Area, crosses the river again and travels along the banks of the river as far as Highway 29.
The western of the James River Heritage Trail is located off of Langhorne Road near Cranehill Drive. There is a trailhead with parking and restroom along Old Langhorne Drive. The southeast end is located just past the bridge for Highway 29.
Another branch of the trail heads down to Park Avenue and Fort Avenue, not far from Miller Park.
Blackwater Creek Bikeway
Blackwater Creek Bikeway is a 2.8-mile long pathway that wanders through the Blackwater Creek Natural Area to the north of Lynchburg. The trail wanders through the dense forest and includes a waterfall. The trails converge to the north of Hollins Street and west of Hollins Mill Road.
