Richmond is situated along the James River in Eastern Virginia. The city is home to the University of Richmond, the Maymont Mansion and this portion of the country is rich in history dating back to the Colonial Era and the Civil War.

Virginia Capital Trail

The Virginia Capital Trail is a 52-mile long wide paved pathway that extends from Richmond to Jamestown in Eastern Virginia. The trail goes past the thickly forested area and farmland of the eastern part of the state following alongside the Scenic Route 5 Corridor. A long bridge takes trail users over the Chickahominy River near the confluence with the James River.

The northwest end of the trail starts along the James River near Downtown Richmond. The southeast end of the Virginia Capital Trail is located at the historic Jamestown Settlement. This attraction has three replicas of the ships that the early settlers used to cross the Atlantic, a restored Powhatan Village, museum and shops.
