Regional Trails

The Blackwater Heritage State Trail is a 10-mile long paved pathway located in the far western side of the Florida Panhandle. The trail extends from the City of Milton to the entry gate for Naval Air Station Whiting Field. The route includes several wooden bridges that span over creeks and the woodlands filled with wildflowers and the native wildlife. The trail is a part of Florida's State Greenways and Trails System.

The north end of the trail is located at the boundary for Naval Air Station Whiting Field. At this point the Military Heritage Trail continues another 0.6 miles into the air station.

Conditions

The Blackwater Heritage State Trail is paved with asphalt for its entire route. The trail is open for bike riding, walking and running. There are relatively few road crossings and opportunities for picnicking and enjoying nature.

End Points

The south end of the Blackwater Heritage State Trail is located at a point to the south of the intersection of Old U.S. 90 and Old Tar Plant Road on the south side of Milton. There are two trailheads in Milton, one is located just north of the intersection of State Highway 90 and Stewart Street. There is a small parking area at this location. The other trailhead is located off of 1st Avenue and Alabama Street in Milton. There is a visitor center, restrooms and parking at this location. This trailhead is adjacent to the Milton Public Library.

The north end of the trail is located at the entrance gate to Naval Air Station Whiting Field along County Road 87A.
