The Erie Trail and the Erie Lackwanna Trail form a 16-mile long paved trail system that extends from Sibley Street in Hammond to W. Summit Street in Crown Point in Northwestern Indiana. The trails were constructed along abandoned railroad right-of-ways and go through the urban areas, the suburban residential areas and past sections of farmland. The trails go past several schools and connect to other recreational trails along the route.
Erie Trail
The Erie Trail is a 5.5-mile long paved path that extends from Sibley Street in Hammond to south of Interstate 80/94 where it intersects the Little Calumet River Levee Trail.
The north end of the Erie Trail is located at Sibley Street, just south of Hohman Avenue in Hammond. At a couple blocks south of this point, the Erie Trail intersects the Monon Trail - Hammond/Muster.
The Erie Trail goes past the following schools and other points of interest: Lake County Superior Court, Henry W. Eggers School, Hammond Civic Center, Hammond High School, Maywood Elementary School and Donald E. Gavit Middle/High School.
The south end of the Erie Trail is located at a point east of Northcote Avenue and River Drive E and west of Indianapolis Boulevard, where it intersects with the Little Calumet River Levee Trail.
To reach the Erie Lackawanna Trail from the Erie Trail, take the Little Calumet River Levee Trail to the east and cross the river just west of Indianapolis Boulevard. Follow the trail around the east side of the Wicker Memorial Park Golf Course and take the branch that heads under Indianapolis Boulevard to Grand Avenue.
Erie Lackawanna Trail
The Erie Lackawanna Trail is a 11.5-mile long paved path that extends from Kennedy Avenue in Hammond to W. Summit Street in Crown Point.
The north end of the trail is located at near the corner of Corinne Drive and Kennedy Avenue in Hammond, just south of Interstate 80/94. This point is across Kennedy Avenue from the Little Calumet River Levee Trail and Homestead Park.
The Erie Lackawanna Trail goes past the following schools, parks and other points of interest: the Laporte Street Trail, Highland High School, Markely Park, Forest Ridge Academy, Griffith Senior High School, Griffith Middle School, Beiriger Elementary School, Turkey Creek Trail and Timothy Ball Elementary School.
The south end of the Erie Lackawanna Trail is located at W. Summit Street, just west of N. Main Street in Crown Point. There is a trailhead with parking at this location.
