The Wiouwash State Trail has two separate sections of unpaved trails located in Western Wisconsin. The northern section is 19 miles long and spans between Birnamwood and Split Rock. The southern section is 22 miles long and spans between Hortonville and Oshkosh. There is a gap of over 30 miles between the two sections of the trail. The trail was constructed along an abandoned railroad right-of-way and has long sweeping curves and gentle grades
The southern section of the Wiouwash State Trail is remote and travels through sections of hardwood forest, across rivers and wetlands, past farmland and through several rural communities. The south end of the trail travels along the shores of Lake Butte des Morts and the Fox River in Oshkosh eventually ending up at the campus of the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh. A few blocks to the east are the paved pathways along Millers Bay and the Menominee Park Zoo. This park along the bay would make a nice resting spot for trail users.
Conditions
The southern section of the Wiouwash State Trail is unpaved with a surface of crushed limestone, with a portion of paved trail within Oshkosh. The trail is open for bike riding, running and walking. Snowmobiles are permitted during winter months outside of urban areas.
