Recreational trails for walking, running and cycling in Racine, Wisconsin
Racine is located in Southeast Wisconsin, about 25 miles south of Downtown Milwaukee. The city is situated on the shores of Lake Michigan. Racine has recreational trails located on the lake front and two trails that head to the north and to the south along an abandoned railroad corridor. There is also the Racine-Sturtevant Trail and the Pike River Trail on the west side of town.
Lake Michigan Pathway
The Lake Michgan Pathway is a system of paved paths that are located around the lake front area where the Root River enters Lake Michigan. There are marinas and restaurants in the area and a stroll along the trail will provide pretty views of Lake Michigan. The trail heads to the south alongside Pershing Park, another branch heads out along the Christopher Columbus Causeway and a third branch heads north along the beach and north of the Racine Zoological Gardens.
Root River Pathway
The Root River Pathway is a series of trails that follow the greenways along the Root River as it meanders through the middle of Racine. The trails goes past Colonial Park, Lincoln Park, Horlick Park, Cedar Bend Park, Washington Park and Park High School. The north end of the pathway is at W. High Street, west of Jefferson Street. The south end of the trail is at 12th Street near Horlick Park Drive. Other shorter sections are located to the east and go as far east as Ontario Street.
MRK Trail
The MRK Trail is a 4.5-mile long paved trail that stretches between 6 Mile Road and Layard Avenue on the north side of Racine. The trail was constructed along an abandoned railroad right-of-way and crosses through residential neighborhoods. The north end is at 6 Mile Road and Michna Road near Racine County Park and Cliffside Park.
Trail users can travel west on 6 Mile Road then north on Douglas Avenue and east on 7 Mile Road to get to the WE Energies Trail.
WE Energies Trail
WE Energies Trail is a 2-mile long paved path that stretches from 7 Mile Road to E. Elm Road and S. Chicago Road near Haas Neighborhood Park in Caledonia.
North Shore Bike Trail
The North Shore Bike Trail follows an abandoned railroad corridor that extends from the north side of Kenosha to the south side of Racine. The south end of the trail is located at 35th Street just east of 30th Avenue in Kenosha. The north end of the North Shore Bike Trail is located at the intersection of 16th Street and West Boulevard in Racine. The Racine-Sturtevant Bike Trail takes off from near the north end of the North Shore Bike Trail and heads off to as far west as Willow Road.
Racine-Sturtevant Bike Trail
The Racine-Sturtevant Bike Trail is a 3.5-mile long paved trail that stretches from Willow Road to the North Shore Bike Trail. The trail intersects the Pine River Trail that heads off to the north to end at Old Spring Street.
