Regional Trails

The Chippewa River State Trail is a 38-mile long paved pathway that extends from Durand to the north side of the community of Lake Hallie in Western Wisconsin. The trail was constructed along an abandoned railroad right-of-way and its route goes through agricultural areas, across wetlands, through thick forests, past sandstone bluffs and across prairie land.

The Chippewa River State Trail intersects with the Red Cedar State Trail that extends from Menomonie to a point southeast of Dunnville. There are also local trails in Eau Claire that intersect with the Chippewa River State Trail. The Old Abe State Trail is also in the same area.

Much of the Chippewa River State Trail runs alongside the meandering Chippewa River. The trail passes several Wisconsin State Natural Areas.

Conditions

The surface of the trail is that of asphalt pavement or an asphalt emulsion. The trail is open for hiking, bike riding and dog walking. A Wisconsin State Trail Pass is required for cyclists over the age of 16 on the section of the trail to the west of Eau Claire.
