Regional Trails

The Fred Meijer Flat River Valley Trail is a 22-mile long paved and unpaved trail that extends from Greenville to Lowell in Central Iowa. The trail is part of the Fred Meijer River Valley Rail Trails, a system of trails that were constructed along abandoned railroad right-of-ways in Central Michigan and located to the east of the Grand Rapids metropolitan area and to the north of Lansing.

The trail goes through the beautiful countryside of Central Michigan, past farmland, across creeks, alongside woodlands and wetlands and past small farming communities. The trail gets its name from the Flat River which the trail goes past, across or alongside for much of the route. there are several bridges for crossing the river along the route.

Conditions

The Fred Meijer Flat River Valley Trail has some paved sections, but for the most part has a surface of ballast or a natural surface. The trail is open for bike riding and hiking. Much of the route is located away from roadways and has few road crossings in the areas away from towns.

The Fred Meijer Flat River Valley Trail is part of the Fred Meijer River Valley Rail Trails and allows a connection to two of the other rail trails in the system. The trail also connects to local recreational trails in Greenville and Lowell.

Fred Meijer Heartland Trail: the two trails meet at N. Lafayette Street and W. Congress Street in Greenville.

Greenville Flat River Trail: this recreational trail makes a large loop around the town and intersects the Fred Meijer Flat River Trail in two locations, west of Clay Street and at Jackson's Landing Park.

Fred Meijer Grand River Trail: this trail heads to the east from the southeast corner of Lowell. The two trails do not meet and trail users will need to use local streets to get from one trail to the other.

Lowell Area Trailway: this is a local recreational trail in Lowell. The two trails meet at the south end of the Fred Meijer Flat River Valley Trail.

End Points

The north end of the Fred Meijer Flat River Valley Trail is located at N. Lafayette Street and W. Congress Street in Greenville. This is also the endpoint of the Fred Meijer Heartland Trail.

 The south end of the trail is located at Foreman Street SE to the west of Beech Street in Lowell.
