Petoskey is located on the shores of Little Traverse Bay at the north end of Lake Michigan. Along Little Traverse Bay there is a string of small communities including Charlevoix, Bay Shore, Petoskey, Bay View, Conway and Harbor Springs. To the east is Conway, Oden and Alanson.
Little Traverse Wheelway
The Little Traverse Wheelway is a 26-mile long system of paved trails and sidewalks that travel along the shoreline of the bay. The trail stretches from Waller Road in Charlevoix on the south to Lake Street in Harbor Springs in the north. The pathway is used by cyclists and pedestrians. The route takes trail users through thick forestland, along the beautiful coastline of the bay, past several public beaches and through each of the communities.
Points of interest along the Little Traverse Wheelway include: Susans Creek Nature Preserve, Taimi Hoag Nature Preserve, Balsam Creek Nature Preserve, Lake Michigan Shores Roadside Park, Loeb Nature Preserve, Bay Harbor Lake Marina, East Park, Solanus Mission Beach, Bayfront Park West, Petoskey City Marina, Bear Riverr Park, Sunset Park, Round Lake Nature Preserve, Martha Cameron Nature Preserve, Harbor Springs Municipal Airport, Sanford Nature Preserve, Bartley Nature Preserve and Harbor Springs Baseball Fields.
The Little Traverse Wheelway intersects with the North Western State Trail near Spring Lake Park along Harbor-Petosky Road.
North Western State Trail
The North Western State Trail is a 32-mile long mostly unpaved pathway that extends from Petoskey to Mackinaw City. The trail was constructed along an abandoned railroad-right-of-way and goes through several local communities. The path is paved with asphalt from Petoskey to Alanson.
The south end of the North Western State Trail is located at Highway 119 and Konle Road near Spring Lake Park.
