Regional Trails

The Kal-Haven Trail is a 33-mile long unpaved pathway that extends from South Haven to Kalamazoo in Western Michigan. The trail was constructed along an abandoned railroad right-of-way and travels cross country through the beautiful Michigan countryside.The trail travels through farmland and forested areas and goes past several small communities. The Kal-Haven Trail State Park is a linear state park that encompasses the trail.

One of the highlights of the trail is the picturesque 108-foot long Donald. F. Nichols Covered Bridge. The bridge is used for crossing the Black River just east of South Haven.

Conditions

The Kal-Haven Trail is unpaved and the surface of the trail is that of packed crushed limestone. In months without snow, the trail is open for non-motorized uses such as bike riding and walking. snowmobiles are allowed in winter. There is an 11-mile stretch where horseback riding is allowed.

Nearby Trails

Van Buren Trail State Park: this trail heads to the southeast from the south side of South Haven. The trail has an unimproved grassy gravel surface and is suitable for hiking and bike riding. The two trails are within 2.5 miles of each other in South Haven.

Local Kalamazoo Trails: the west end of the Kal-Haven Trail meets up with the Kalamazoo River Valley Trail system that extends the route farther into the core of the city.

End Points

The west end of the Kal-Haven Trail is located off of N Bailey Avenue just north of E. Wells Street. There is a large trailhead at this spot near the marinas on the Black River.

The east end of the Kal-Haven Trail is located on 10th Street N northwest of Kalamazoo. There is a large trailhead at this location. The trail then connects to the Kalamazoo River Valley Trail system that heads to thw southeast.
