The North Central State Trail is a a 61-mile long unpaved pathway that extends from Mackinaw City to Gaylord in the Northern Lower Peninsula area of Michigan. The route of the trail goes through a beautiful part of Michigan with lovely shoreline views of the Straits of Mackinac on Lake Huron and Bois Blanc Island, through thick forests, past Mullett Lake, across creeks, rivers, wetlands and past several local communities.
Conditions
The North Central State Trail is unpaved for most of the route. The surface of the trail has been improved with packed crushed limestone. The route has relatively few road crossings and is quite remote in some areas. The trail is open for non-motorized uses in summer, such as bike riding, running and wildlife viewing.

End Points
The north end of the North Central State Trail is located at the intersection of Cadillac Street and S Nicolet Street in Mackinaw City. There is a trailhead located off of Mackinaw Crossings Drive. This is also the location of the northern end of the North Western State Trail that extends as far south as Petrosky State Park near Little Traverse Bay.
There is a large trailhead in Cheboygan at S. Western Avenue and Taylor Street. The Topinabee trailhead is located right on N. Straits Highway.
The south end of the North Central State Trail is located at the end of Random Lane in Gaylord. This is near Otsego County Fairgrounds, North Ohio Elementary School and the athletic fields on Fairview Road.
