Regional Trails

Minnetonka is located to the west of Minneapolis in southeastern Minnesota.

There are two regional recreational trails that pass through Minnetonka, the Lake Minnetonka LRT Regional Trail and the Minnesota River Bluffs Trail. Other recreational trails include paved pathways that follow alongside major roadways, trails that wander through the local parks and natural areas and trails that wander through residential neighborhoods.

Lake Minnetonka LRT Regional Trail

The Lake Minnetonka LRT Regional Trail is a 16-mile long paved and unpaved trail located to the southwest of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area. The trail extends from the community of Victoria, travels along the residential areas south of Lake Minnetonka, through the City of Chanhassen, the City of Shorewood and the City of Minnetonka, then over to the City of Hopkins.

Within Minnetonka, the Lake Minnetonka LRT Regional Trail passes through the middle of the area. The trail goes by Minnetonka Middle School East, the Minnetonka Community Center and passes close by to Big Willow Park.  There are local recreational trails that connect to the Lake Minnetonka LRT Regional Trail. These are the multi-use paths that runs alongside Highway 101 and Interstate 494.

Minnesota River Bluffs Trail

The Minnesota River Bluffs Regional Trail is a 13-mile long unpaved pathway located in the southwest portion of the Twin Cities Metropolitan Area in Central Minnesota. The route of the trail spans from the northeast side of Chaska to 11th Avenue S and Excelsior Boulevard in Hopkins.

The trail was constructed along an abandoned railroad right-of-way and travels through rural areas of woodlands and farmland, past lakes and parks and through suburban neighborhoods. The northeast end of the trail meets up with the Cedar Lake LRT Regional Trail that heads into the heart of Minneapolis.

Within Minnetonka, the Minnesota River Bluffs Trail is located on the southeastern side of the area. The trail comes from Eden Prairie and connects to multi-use paths along W. 62nd Street. In the community of Hopkins, located to the east of Minnetonka, the Minnesota River Bluffs Trail connects to the Cedar Lake LRT Regional Trail that heads into Minneapolis.
