Cañon City is located about 35 miles northwest of the City of Pueblo in Central Colorado. The city is situated along the Arkansas River at the base of rugged foothills and is the gateway to the Royal Gorge Bridge and Park.
Arkansas Riverwalk
The Arkansas Riverwalk is a 5.5-mile long mostly unpaved trail that follows the natural areas alongside the river as it flows past Cañon City. The trail goes past a number of parks and other points of interest and goes through cottonwood groves and past wetlands. The trail is open for bike riding and walking and provides a great place for the locals to get some outdoor exercise or for visitors stopping on their way to visit the Royal Gorge Bridge to the west of Cañon City.
The west end of the trail system is located along Highway 50 at the entrance to Pueblo Community College. The trail heads south crossing Tunnel Drive and crosses the Arkansas River using a pedestrian bridge. The trail then heads east through town. The route includes Centennial Park, the Royal Gorge Route Railroad Depot and the Cañon City Off-leash Dog Park.
The east end of the Arkansas Riverwalk is located at MacKenzie Avenue.
Tunnel Drive Trail
The Tunnel Drive Trail is a 2.6-mile long unpaved road that is closed to cars and open for bike riding and hiking. The trail goes through the rugged terrain of the cliffs above the Arkansas River and above an active railroad line and goes through tunnels along the way.
To get to the Tunnel Drive Trail, turn west off of Highway 50 on the west edge of Cañon City. There is a trailhead with parking at 0.6-miles down the road.
The Tunnel Drive Trail now intersects the Arkansas River Walk at the intersection of Tunnel Drive and Highway 50 allowing trail users to connect the two trails without having to ride or walk along the road.
