Recreational trails for walking, running and cycling in Windsor, Colorado
The Town of Windsor is located 4 miles east of Interstate 25 in Northern Colorado. The town is situated along the Cache La Poudre River and has lovely golf courses and numerous residential neighborhoods. There is a quaint downtown area in the center of Windsor. The town is conveniently located between the larger cities of Greeley, Fort Collins and Loveland. Communities in the area include Timnath and the Ptarmigan, Pelican Lakes, Water Valley and Highlands Meadows neighborhoods.
The Town of Windsor has its own recreational trail system that follows along the water canal for Greeley and wraps around Windsor Lake. The Poudre River Trail crosses through Windsor and reaches as far as the east side of Greeley. There are also walking paths located in many of the residential neighborhoods.
Poudre River Trail
The Poudre River Trail is a 21-mile long paved pathway that extends from Island Grove Regional Park on the Northeast side of Greeley to River Bluffs Open Space west of Windsor. The trail travels through the natural areas alongside the Cache la Poudre River and goes past a number of local parks and residential neighborhoods along the way. The trail is wide and well maintained, open for bike riding, walking and running. Dogs are allowed if on a leash. The trail provides a great place to take the family as there are relatively few road crossings.
Trailsheads for the Poudre River Trail are located at River Bluffs Open Space along County Road 32 E, along Weld County Road 13, 1/2 mile south of Highway 392, at Eastman Park on 7th Street and the Kodak Trailhead on Highway 257.

Windsor Lake and the Greeley Canal No 2 Trail
Windsor Lake is located just northeast of Downtown Windsor. There is a 2-mile long paved pathway around the lake. There are also paved and unpaved pathways along the Greeley Canal No. 2 to each side of Lake Windsor. Parking is available at Boardwalk Park to the north of Main Street and east of downtown and along N. 7th Street. The canal trail goes past Windsor High School and Grandview Elementary School. The trail around the lake has pretty views of the peaks of the Rocky Mountains in the distance and has benches, restrooms, fishing piers and a small dog park.
The Greeley Canal No. 2 Trail has paved and unpaved portions. The paved section of the Greeley Canal No. 2 Trail to the east of Hollister Lake Road connects to the unpaved Great Western Trail with a bridge across the canal.
Great Western Trail
The Great Western Trail is 3.3-mile long unpaved pathway that extends from the Greeley Canal No. 2 to the Town of Severance to the north of Windsor. The trail is graded and improved with compacted crushed stone. The trail follows the route of the old sugar trains that transported sugar beets from the farms to the local factories. The trail goes past wide open farmland and is used for children getting to Severance Middle School. There is also a mile long section of the trail to the northeast in Eaton. There are plans to close the gap between the two sections of the Great Western Trail.
