The Animas River Trail is a 7.5-mile long paved pathway that follows the route of the river through most of the Durango area.
The trail starts 2.5 miles to the north of the downtown area. Much of this northern portion of the Animas River Trail is located near the tracks for the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. In the summer months, there is a good chance that you might see the historic train go by at certain times of the day. The trail goes past a number of local parks in this area.
In the Downtown Durango area, the Animas River Trail takes a loop to the west, but is adjacent to part of town with the historic buildings, restaurants, shops and train depot.
The trail then heads to the south side of Durango. This section is less congested and has fewer road crossings. Trail users will be delighted with the views of the surrounding rocky cliffs and the groves of cottonwoods and willows along the waterway. In summer months, kayaks can be seen navigating the river. In the southern section, the trail goes past the Durango Mall, other commercial and industrial areas as well as some residential neighborhoods.
