Marin County is located on the Pacific Coast of California. It is just across the Golden Gate Bridge from San Francisco and is basically a peninsula that is placed between San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean. On the bay side, there is a string of communities with beautiful views of the waterfront look east to Oakland, southeast to the Oakland Bay Bridge, and south to the San Francisco skyline. Along the way there are marinas, parks, bays, wetlands, islands and the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge. On the ocean side there is Golden Gate National Recreation Area with dramatic view of Golden Gate Bridge, farther up the coast is Mt. Tamalpais State Park, Muir Woods National Monument, Stinson Beach and Bolinas. Drive farther along the coast you will come to Point Reyes National Seashore and the Point Reyes Lighthouse. the famous Highway 1 goes across Marin County, heads north hugging the coastline then skirts the redwood forests and follows the shore of Tomales Bay.
Marin County and its various communities has a number of recreational trails for cyclists, walking and running. The Bay Trail has a number of segments along the waterfront, there are paths get to the neighborhood parks and athletic fields. Farther north there are the trails at Hamilton Wetlands Preserve for observing the waterfowl and wildlife of the area.
